GEOGRAPHY

Palmeira is a town in the Northwest of Galicia, Spain. It has an area of aproximately 880 hectares (3.4 square miles) and a population of about 3000 people. Almost without an industry of its own, it lives mainly from neighboring industries and from emigration, although there still exist some local activities.

Palmeira belongs to the judicial party and is one of the parishes of the town council of Riveira in the province of A Coruña. Embraced within the peninsula of the southern Barbanza , it is bordered by Santa Uxía de Riveira from the southwest, Artes from the west, Oleiros from the northwest, A Pobra do Caramiñal from the north and Ría de Arousa from the east.

It is also known that another town with the same name exists in the province of Lugo, within the town council of Ribadeo.

Like many other Galician towns, the economic, social, and cultural scene of Palmeira is largely influenced by emigration. A town with an interesting history that very few are familiar with outside of its limits, at least as an independent entity, perhaps always shadowed by its town council of Riveira. Probably the most comprehensive written work and compilation of data about Palmeira is found in the book " Síntesis histórica de Palmeira 1600-1850", by Xosé Alvarez Castrelo, which provides some of the information included here.
As a tribute to its people, this page is dedicated to all those that even if they do not come from Palmeira, carry memories of this beautiful village, whether it is because of their own experience or that of their predecessors. It is also dedicated to all those Galician towns which somehow have suffered a similar fate.
